Minnesota Auto Insurance Requirements
Minnesota requires all drivers to carry minimum auto insurance coverage. As of 2026, the state mandates:
Minimum Liability Coverage
- $30,000 bodily injury per person
- $60,000 bodily injury per accident
- $10,000 property damage per accident
This is often written as 30/60/10 coverage.
No-Fault Insurance (PIP)
Minnesota is a no-fault state, meaning your own insurance covers your medical expenses regardless of who caused the accident. The minimum Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage is $40,000.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
While not required, we strongly recommend uninsured motorist coverage. Many Minnesota drivers are underinsured, and this protects you if you're hit by someone without adequate coverage.
Why Minimum Coverage May Not Be Enough
The minimum 30/60/10 coverage sounds adequate until you consider:
- Average hospital stays in Minnesota cost $15,000-$50,000
- A serious accident can result in $100,000+ in medical bills
- Your personal assets are at risk if you cause an accident exceeding your coverage
